# Can't I filter strings without a @search directive in the schema? GraphQL Tour Basic Features site 13

Hi, dumb basic question _(((i learn now dgraph completely from the ground up to be able to stop asking much dumb questions)))_

```auto
type Person {
  id: ID!
  xid: String! @id
  name: String!
  age: Int @search
  friends: [Person] @hasInverse(field: "friends")
  ownsPets: [Animal] @hasInverse(field: "owner")
}

type Animal {
  id: ID!
  xid: String! @id
  name: String!
  owner: Person @hasInverse(field: "ownsPets")
}

```

Is it possible to filter string IDs **without** a @search directive in the schema on that field? i think No, but I just ask to make sure

So, that means ONLY @id directives are filterable without a @search directive. is that correct?
